Dan went through these steps in the January meeting where he did a live pen turning demonstration. Photos can be found in the photo gallery.
Pen Turning
Blanks
Cut 5/8 inch square
Cut blank about 1/16 to 1/32 longer then brass tube
Drill a 7mm or 9/32 hole in the center of the blank. Hold blank vertical to drill press table.
Installing brass tube into the blank
Sand brass tube with 100 grit sandpaper
Put tube on a 1/4 dowel or some way to hold the brass tube
Apply CA glue to the full length of the tub and end of the blank
Insert tube into blank twisting tube to spread glue inside of the blank
Make sure the tube is just below the edge of the blank
Work fast as you only have a few seconds to position the tube in the blank
Lay the blank on a piece of wood or paper towel
Let dry 10 - 15 minutes
Blank preparation
Trim the blank flush with the brass tube end using a Pen mill
Determine the pen tip end
Put the blanks on the pen mandrel bushing-blank-bushing-blank-bushing-center piece (red, white, blue band), bushing-blank-band-blank-busing
Tighten nut, then position tail stock on the end of the mandrel, caution: do not over tighten the tail stock as it is possible to bend the mandrel.
Turning
Position the tool rest about 1/4" from the blank, rotate and check for clearance.
Turn the blank to about the bushing size
Move the tool rest out of the way
Sand 100, 150, 220, 320, White flexible abrasive pad, and dust
Check for defects and scratches
Apply sanding sealer, wipe dry with cloth, apply Crystal coat or some other friction polish, dampen cloth (and old T-shirt), apply the finish to the blank and then polish the blank until it shine
Assemble the pen
Press the tip in place
Press mechanism in other end carefully, (do not push in beyond the line), install ink cartridge to check tip extension, and adjust if necessary
Install clip
Put ring or band on mechanism andput the 2 pieces together
Congratulations!
